An integrated Fracture Control Approach to Life Assessment of Composite Airframe Utilizing Structural Health Monitoring

Ferri Aliabadi is Professor of Aerostructures & Zaharoff Professor of Aviation and has worked in the field of Solids and Structures, establishing an international reputation for his achievements in development of Computational Methods related to Fracture & Damage Mechanics. He has pioneered a new generation of boundary element method and is noted for his contributions to other fields including Acoustics noise control, Nonlinear Mechanics, Contact and Wear Mechanics,Optimisation and Reliability Analysis, Multiscale Material Modelling and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). During the last decade, he has pursued research and development in SHM for composite airframe in collaboration with the aeronautics industry (Airbus, Leonardo) supported by significant EU funding. He has been PI and coordinator of several EU projects including SMASH and SCOPE and coordinated the SHM platform for the wing in SARISTU project. The latest project is a 10m Euro cleansky II, core-partnership SHERLOC which he is the PI and coordinator with the aim of developing the next generation of smart (highly sensorised) composite airframe.

Head of Department of Aeronautics, Imperial College (2009-2017). Prior to joining Imperial College in 2005, he was Professor of Computational Mechanics, Director of Research and the Director of Aerospace Engineering at Queen Mary, University of London (1997-2004) and Reader and Head of Damage Tolerance Division at WIT, Southampton (1987-1997), Ben Franklin Scholar, PA, USA (1986), Research Fellow, Aero and Astro, Southampton University (1984-86)
